Colbury Nursing Home
Colbury Nursing Home is situated in the residential area of Calmore, just six miles from Southampton town centre
Welcome
The care we offer
A nursing and residential home, Colbury has been specifically designed to meet the needs of people with dementia. We offer long term care and respite as well as convalescence, palliative care, and care for people with Parkinson's disease.
Our standards of care are first-rate. We employ registered nurses including mental health nurses and highly trained care assistants who provide 24-hour professional support.
Key features of Colbury House
The interior of Colbury House has been decorated and furnished to ensure the home is visually appealing and stimulating. All corridors have memory triggers including vibrant colours to aid residents’ orientation, and themes such as eye-catching pictures and bright floral prints.
The communal areas around the home have interesting items to touch and feel. For example statues and wall hangings in a variety of fabrics and textures. Doors to resident areas are painted in strong colours. Those to other non-public areas are painted in lighter colours to act as a prompt and aid memory.

Quick help
The most common mental infirmities in older people are dementia-related conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease. Depending on the level of confusion, care may be available in residential or nursing homes, but there are also specialist units with experienced nursing staff and facilities adapted to the needs of residents. If you're not sure of the care required, it is best to discuss this with the manager of your chosen home, who can arrange an assessment. Dementia care is often referred to as Elderly Mentally Infirm or EMI care.

Respite
Quick help
Respite care can offer a welcome break for you and/or your carer and can be provided in most care homes, offering residents a temporary stay for perhaps a week or two. It can also help to cover periods of time when a carer is unavailable. Many Bupa care homes offer respite care if there is a room vacant.

This is active, compassionate care of the chronically and terminally ill, directed towards improving the quality of life. Palliative care particularly focuses on the control of pain and symptoms. These specialist approaches include the individual, the family, carers and friends, and extend to bereavement and grief.

Parkinson's
Quick help
Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder caused by a shortage of chemical transmitter (dopamine) in the brain. People with Parkinson's disease develop stiffness, tremors and slow movement that can become worse over time. Some homes offer specialist care for people with conditions such as Parkinson's and Huntington's. We can also care for adults with learning disabilities who require a specialist supervised environment.

Bedrooms
The bedrooms feature ensuite facilities and are decorated in calming pastel colours. All have 24-hour call systems, underfloor heating, aerials and smoke detectors. Some of the bedrooms have views of the delightful landscaped gardens. We encourage residents to personalise their rooms with their own pictures, photographs and ornaments to make them even more homely.
There is a memory box outside each resident's bedroom which can be filled with personal items such as photographs, certificates, and other memory triggers. These can provide a link with the person’s past and provide prompts for staff and visitors, and the opportunity to reminisce about the resident’s life.

Food
Mealtimes are an important part of each day in a care home. The chef at Colbury House always ensures there is a tasty, seasonal menu, with a hot and cold choice available. We aim to fully understand new residents' nutritional needs, tastes, special diets and preferences shortly after their arrival. We also encourage feedback so we can continue to improve our food service.
Delicious home-made cakes are served each day with afternoon tea, and there is a Sundown menu available between 6.30pm and 6.30am. As well as our everyday menus, we make sure that on their birthdays each resident receives a special meal of their choice and a personalised birthday cake.

Activities
The dedicated activity co-ordinator regularly plans enjoyable and stimulating activities such as music and movement sessions, games, reminiscence therapy and painting. We also encourage residents to continue with their own hobbies and interests if they wish.
We recognise that activity involves anything that may bring comfort, stimulation, pleasure and a sense of wellbeing - this could be holding someone’s hand, sharing cups of tea or enjoying the taste and texture of interesting food. Residents may even enjoy familiar household activities such as dusting or laying tables if they want.
The home holds special events at least once a month. These include special themed events for Burns night, Pancake day, Mother’s day, Wimbledon, and Halloween to name just a few.
